Andrew Sutherland And Carrie Marill
October 9 - November 6, 2004

For our first show of the fall season, sixspace is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring sculptural works and paintings by Andrew Sutherland and Carrie Marill. Through different methods, both artists re-examine the mediums used in creating art whether it’s by Sutherland’s usage of unconventional materials such as vinyl and cardboard or by Marill’s exploration of an old medium (painting) in a new context.

Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Sutherland will be showing his material-based work of corrugated vinyl paintings, carved wood-grain cardboard, and poured vinyl sculptures. Diversely influenced, his work explores what happens when sketch book drawings, everyday imagery and personal iconography's collide with an inventive use of such materials as; wood, paint, polyurethane, video, and corrugated cardboard. Born in 1978, Sutherland attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO where received a BA in Multi Media Art. After graduating in 2000 he moved to New York. Sutherland’s first solo show Formation took place at the Reed Space in NYC in 2003. He has also participated in several group shows, including; TMWRK (2003) at the Nike Gallery NYC, and Foaming at the Mouth (2003), a group show put on by “Animal NY” magazine. His work has been featured in "Nylon", Lodown", "XLR8R magazine", and "I NY" by 4am press.

Making her Los Angeles debut, Carrie Marill presents a new series of acrylic-on-canvas paintings featuring elements of design, such as furniture and interiors, and modulations. Providing a subtle contrast to Sutherland’s strong/bold pieces, Marill’s delicately painted works represent artificial objects. Through her painting Marill explores how or even if two-dimensional painting can stimulate an affected emotional response. Because most objects today can be simulated, she questions if the artificial becomes more of the “natural” and the painting itself is more “unnatural.” Carrie Marill received her BA is 2002 at the San Francisco State University and earlier this year she earned her MFA at Cornell University. Solo exhibitions of her delicate acrylic on canvas paintings have been held at the Tjaden Gallery at Cornell University, Flux Gallery and the Artery in San Francisco, while group exhibitions have been at Viridean Artists @ Chelsea and Max Gallery, San Francisco. Marill has recently relocated from New York to Arizona.
