sixspace will begin its 2004 exhibition schedule with Risen: Tales of Golems and Voodoo with Martin Ontiveros and Donovan Crosby. Both of these artists will present new paintings that explore the themes in differing folklores. Through depicting his signatures style robots, Ontiveros’ work deals with the Jewish legend of Golem, an automaton created to do man’s tasks. Crosby will exhibit works based on the haunting tales of voodoo and magic that includes zombies, spells, and damned souls.

Martin Ontiveros lives in Portland, Oregon. Growing up, he had little interest in anything but comics, cartoons, movies, toys, and drawing. He has since utilized these popular culture influences and created a successful career in illustration and fine art. With his extremely clean lines, attention to detail, and fun depictions of robots and toys, he has become the artist to watch. Ontiveros has been included in exhibitions in the West (Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles) and was recently included in a group exhibition at Rocket Gallery, Japan. Selected publications featuring his work include Portland Mercury, Dazed and Confused, The Stranger, New York Press, and the underground zine Pencil Fight.

Los Angeles artist Donovan Crosby graduated from Cal Arts in 1997 and has since done work for selected group exhibitions and animation studios. Most recently she exhibited her work in Philadelphia and has plans to show in Portland in mid-2004. With a unique brush technique that softness her paintings, Crosby combines animation-style imagery with a classic touch. Risen is her first Los Angeles exhibition.
