In the Annex…
Evah Fan - Performance Art
May 19 - June 16, 2007
Reception: Saturday, May 19 from 6-9pm

In the Annex (concurrent with Karin Weiner's So Many Daunting New Complexities), sixspace is excited to present Evah Fan's second exhibition with the gallery, Performance Art. Featuring twelve new gouache-on-paper and collage pieces, Fan's new work explores puns, clichés, linguistic puzzles, humorous narratives, and the occasional pathos that create frozen moments or "still scenes."

Don't be confused…Evah Fan's exhibition Performance Art isn't a deviation from her known medium of works-on-paper to literal performance art. Rather, it's Fan taking her ongoing interest with word-play (puns, literal sayings, etc.) into the realm of something quite absurd - "performance art." Her new gouache-on-paper paintings depict ideas pulled mostly from music and theatrical genres, emphasizing play on elementary humor, mini-narratives, and the utilization of negative space. Fan tackles mundane objects and figures in negative planes throwing in elements of parody and irony that address a certain naïve humor.

Evah Fan (born 1980) received her BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with an emphasis on Illustration/Communications design in 2004. She has shown her gouache on paper pieces in cities such as Chicago (IL), Los Angeles (CA), San Francisco (CA) Portland (OR), Hamtramck (MI), Boston (MA), New York (NY), Dallas (TX), and Bristol (United Kingdom). Her work has been featured in publications such as American Illustration, Art Prostitute, Bust Magazine, Drama Magazine, Flaunt, New York Times Magazine, Nylon, and Tokion. She currently lives and works in Berkeley, California. Performance Art marks Fan's second exhibition at sixspace - her first was Go Lov Me Face Btr - C Roof Btw Leg Ave with Florencio Zavala in 2005
