Nathan Cabrera :: Throwing Rocks At Girls
March 29 - April 26, 2003

sixspace is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist, Nathan Cabrera. Cabrera is a versatile artist and with Throwing Rocks at Girls he features new works such as life-sized sculptures, paintings, and print media. The artwork, which includes a seven feet tall three-dimensional bear, a life size female Stormtrooper with a revolving cannon, paintings of girls framed with a target range etched in glass, can prove to be hyper-violent and confrontational but still manage to retain a playful sense of humor.

Cabrera is recently known for creating a life-sized sculpture of a shotgun toting girlscout on a low-rider bicycle (Be Prepared), casting real guns to make sugary sweet pink one-sided plastic sculptures that feature a little girl and an ice-cream cone (I Scream, You Scream), and two foot cupie dolls with their insides on the outside (Cute On the Inside). It's certain that Cabrera will take these influences of toys, comic books, girls, pop culture and High Art a step further with Throwing Rocks at Girls.

Cabrera began his art career straight out of high school when he started working in comic books. After producing comic books for nearly seven years for Image comics, Marvel, DC, and array of other publishers, he began a new career in entertainment and developed shows for Fox Kids, The Jim Henson Company, and Disney. A self-taught artist, he has been included in group exhibitions along the West Coast in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz magazine, on CD covers, in toy stores and on television. His knowledge of sculpting and mold making has led him to sculpt toy versions of other well-known artists' work. Cabrera has also made models and props for film and television and is currently producing on an upcoming children's television show for NBC and Discovery Kids.
