February 19 – March 19, 2005

Reception: Saturday, February 19 from 7-10 pm (Artist will be in attendance)
Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12-6pm

Beauty in the Breakdown, the debut Los Angeles solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist Laura Mosquera, opens at sixspace this February. Combining figurative elements (mainly people) and the abstract atmosphere that serves as their background plane, Mosquera will exhibit a new series of acrylic paintings and ink-and-ink drawings

Laura Mosquera’s work is grounded in contemporary human experiences and reflections of everyday life exploring the representation of reality and the perception of what is real and its construction using non-linear narrative. They are cinematic depictions of seemingly inconsequential moments describing everyday narratives. While there is no linear narrative there is enough information to suggest a mood open to the interpretation of the viewer. The drawings and paintings are constructed with the use of snapshots. The figures are never posed, but rather captured in a moment, unaware of being documented. The work acts as movie stills, shots of a moment in time. Within the paintings the distance between the color as photographed (as it really was) and the color as painted creates the interpretive space for the viewer.

Each piece in Beauty in the Breakdown evokes a nostalgic referential interior world. True nostalgia is nostalgia for the present; the melancholic awareness that the present is always what is in the process of coming apart, of ceasing to exist. In general, the story is one of a sense of loss, of something missing, an intangible. Through each piece there is the idea of longing and searching for this intangible.

Laura Mosquera (b. Panama City 1966, lives Chicago) received her M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999.
