Glen E. Friedman :: Fuck You All
November 2-30, 2002

sixspace is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition with seminal photographer Glen E. Friedman. Destined to be the art event of the fall, Friedman's Fuck You All exhibition highlights images from his books Fuck You Heroes and Fuck You Too (1976-1995). This is the first complete showing of this exhibition and will be the second time Friedman and sixspace have teamed up; the first was in Chicago, 1999.

Glen E. Friedman is the most prolific photographer of his generation. His images of the early Dogtown skateboarders in the late 1970s and early 1980s along with the burgeoning hip-hop and punk rock scenes have made him one of the most important photographers today. With the uncanny ability to capture images of people whose subculture was about to change the world, his subjects range from Jay Adams and Tony Alva to Run DMC and the Beastie Boys to Minor Threat and Black Flag, among many others. Over the years, Friedman has been able to define the moments of the movements that defined an era. This has cemented his place in history as an uncompromising, extremely gifted artist.

This exhibition presents nearly 35 original photographs by Friedman including images of a young LL Cool J, Ice-T, Run DMC, Bad Brains, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Beastie Boys, Jay Adams, Tony Alva, and Steve Olson. In addition to these images, there will be seven never-before enlarged photographs on display. These works have been created for sixspace and are printed in a special large format (up to 30" x 50"). They are only available as Artist Proofs in an ultra limited edition.

Fuck You All premiered in 1997 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, England. Since then it has been exhibited overseas in Sydney, Australia, Harajuku and Shibuya, in Tokyo Japan, Florence, Milan, Sicily, and Rome in Italy, Berlin, Germany and Stockholm, Sweden. Stateside, shows have been in Chicago, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. Friedman has had books of his work published including Fuck You Heroes, Fuck You Too and The Idealist; all of which are in multiple pressings. In 2002, he released his latest book with mentor C.R. Stecyk III titled Dogtown - The Legend of the Z-Boys that was inspiration to the award winning documentary film Dogtown and Z-Boys that Friedman co-produced.
