Echo Eggebrecht – The Least Missing

Project room: Robin Ward – Snow Blind Water Drop

April 15 – May 13, 2006
Reception: Saturday, April 15 from 6-9pm

sixspace is thrilled to present The Least Missing by Echo Eggebrecht. The first Los Angeles solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based Eggebrecht will feature new paintings and works on paper.

Echo Eggebrecht constructs her own reality in her acrylic-on-birch paintings. The vacant landscape imagery portrayed in the final paintings, which are at once painterly and flat, actually results from a still life scene the artist painstakingly creates via miniatures in her studio. Evoking a sense of familiarity, these everyday "Americana" depictions (a forest, a backyard picnic, a playground) also convey a sense of abandonment. Without figures in these scenes, the narrative becomes open-ended and thus contains both a sense of strangeness and comfort for the viewer. In 2004 Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, "Ms. Eggebrecht favors empty landscapes, whose roiled grass is meticulously rendered and dotted with wry contradictions and bits of Americana."

Eggebrecht (born 1977) received her BFA in 2000 at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago and is completing her MFA at Hunter College this spring. She has held solo exhibitions at sixtyseven and (upcoming) at Nicole Klagsburn in New York as well as group exhibitions at Nicole Klagsburn, White Box and Monya Rowe in New York, Wendy Cooper Gallery in Chicago, Groeflin Maag Gallery in Basel, Switzerland, and sixspace in Los Angeles. She will be included in the upcoming show Poets on Painters at the Ulrich Museum, Kansas in 2007. Reviews of Eggebrecht's work have been published in the New York Times, NY Arts Magazine, New American Paintings, and the "Reading Section" of Harper's Magazine in December 2004 and April 2006. The Least Missing is Eggebrecht's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.
