Coop :: Parts With Appeal
August 14 - September 18, 2004

Reception: Saturday, August 14 from 7-10 pm
Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12-6pm

This August, sixspace is proud to present the first solo exhibition by Coop (Los Angeles) in nearly five years, Parts with Appeal. This exhibition also marks the debut of Coop's first painting series in a significant way - he will be constructing one continuous acrylic painting measuring at an impressive 78 feet that is comprised of four separate panels each made up of 6x6 foot paintings. The major exhibition Parts with Appeal denotes a significant turning point in Coop's artistic development and fine art career.

With a nod to both the scale and the bold iconography used by James Rosenquist, Coop appropriates the very pop-culture imagery that he has created (women, devils, cars, etc.) by dissecting, fragmenting and examining their parts. By reassembling these crucial elements, and therefore re-contextualizing, he has transformed them into a new whole. As these images have been reconfigured, Coop found it necessary to produce them in something not recently associated with his work; the classic medium of painting. Using acrylics, these works contain a deep texture that details the creative hand when viewing them closely. But as the viewer steps back and experiences the large work as a constructed whole, the acrylic lines display a cohesive sensibility.

Coop came out to Los Angeles from Bixby, Oklahoma in the late 1980s and quickly became regarded as one of the preeminent underground artists of his time. Through his prolific poster work (for bands such as Nirvana, the Ramones, and The Sex Pistols), his custom font stylings for House Industries, his sold out first-edition book "Devil's Advocate" and his popular sketchbook "The Big Fat One", and his iconic devil girls, smoking devil, and cars, his work has been described as being "now more recognizable to modern youth than that of Rembrandt." Exhibitions of his work have been held in galleries and museums in Los Angeles, London, New York, Chicago, and Zurich, Switzerland.
