Coop :: ARRRR!!
May 6 - May 28, 2000

sixspace presents a two-day event for the opening of L.A. artist Coop's exhibition ARRRR!!. On Friday, May 5th Quimby's Bookstore, located at 1854 West North Avenue, will host a meet-and-greet with the artist from 7-10pm. Fans and collectors will be able to meet the artist and discuss his art, upcoming projects, and purchase new Coop merchandise. This event is the precursor to the opening of Coop's exhibition ARRRR!! at sixspace from 6-10 pm on Saturday May 6th. On view will be a healthy collection of original artwork by Coop featuring limited edition, silk-screened poster art and original artist drawings. The exhibition continues through May 28th.

"Coop's vision, custom built for speed desire, flaming and fetishist, is the quintessence of Southern California car culture distilled through punk rock aggression and grunge angst." -C-Pop gallery

In part with sixspace's mission to showcase artists who are challenging the existing notions of art and pushing art's boundaries, ARRRR!! displays the generation of new pop-icon images which Coop has constructed. These images, which include his women (devil girls, pirate babes, etc.), devils, and monsters can be seen everywhere from car stickers to Altoids ads to concert posters to gallery walls. It is because of this, that his images have become part of the pop-culture that began in California and is spreading throughout the world. Along with his contemporaries Frank Kozik and Robert Williams, Coop is an integral part of the low-brow, new art movement fueled by magazines that reach beyond the boundaries of the traditional art world such as Juxtapoz.

"The icons he has made his own bear witness to both his artistic skill and savvy marketing. The work is accessible, instantly identifiable and so informed that it also serves as a virtual catalogue of pop culture from the 1930s through the mid-1960s."
-CR Stecyk III, interview for Juxtapoz Magazine 1997

Coop's work has been shown throughout the United States. These exhibitions include "But is it Art" at Grumpy City Club, Minnesota, "Robogasm" at Merry Karnowsky Gallery, Los Angeles, and "Fat Chance" at Laluzdejesus gallery in Los Angeles. He showed at New Yorkıs CBGB's in 1998 and he was also a part of C-Pop Gallery in Detroit, grand re-opening exhibition. Last April, "Good 'N' Plenty," opened at Last Chance Saloon in London; his first show overseas. He has drawn numerous album covers some of which include: an AC/DC tribute album, Electric Frankenstein, NOFX, and MXPX. He recently did an ad poster for Altoids to promote their new cinnamon flavored mint. His amazing, limited edition silk-screened rock posters are literally too many to count.
