Richard Colman :: Winter in Aphelion
May 3 - 31, 2003

sixspace is proud to announce the first West Coast solo exhibition by Richard Colman. His exhibition of new works will consist of watercolor and ink drawings (including four four-paneled scenes nearly eight feet in length) along with small paintings. Among other interesting and sometimes perverse characters, his new body of work will depict other-worldly deviant girls with knifes, castles, masked men and smiling bears. Influenced by street/graffiti art, Colman fuses his amusing narrative scenes with disturbing imagery that initially fools onlookers into thinking these deviant scenes are actually something sweet.

“His smiling style of anti-superheroism and romantic melancholy often elicit furrowed brows paired with the laughter of shared experience.” While You Were Sleeping, Issue 18

Born 1976 in Silver Spring, Maryland, Richard Colman currently lives and works in New York. Colman attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 1998-2000 and has since been in a steady stream of exhibitions including Free Agents: A History of DC Graffiti, Playhaters with Ron English, Shepard Fairey and Dalek (Museum of Contemporary Art, D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles), Max Fish (New York), Who Do We Appreciate (New York), Royal Elastics Street Wise (London), the Baltimore Arts Festival, 17ON17 (Chicago), and an upcoming show at MOCA D.C. with Dalek, Stephen Powers, Mike Giant, and NEWA. He has also been included in publications such as While You Were Sleeping and Juxtapoz and has completed murals for Coca-Cola, Mattel Toys, and the NYNY Hotel in Las Vegas.
