COOP
Lives Los Angeles, CA

Coop came out to Los Angeles from Bixby, Oklahoma in the late 1980s and quickly became regarded as one of the preeminent underground artists of his time. Through his prolific poster work (over 100 custom prints for bands such as Nirvana, the Ramones, The Sex Pistols and otheres), his custom font stylings for House Industries, his sold out first-edition book "Devil's Advocate: the Art of Coop" and his popular sketchbook "The Big Fat One", as well as his iconic imagery of devil girls, smoking devil, and cars, Coop has solidified his place in pop-culture history. Having accomplished a long art career with a successful commercial one (MTV, Altoids, etc), his work has been described as being "now more recognizable to modern youth than that of Rembrandt." Exhibitions of his work have been held in galleries and museums in Los Angeles, London, New York, Chicago, and Zurich, Switzerland.

His most recent exhibition at sixspace, Parts with Appeal, featured a continuous 78-foot multi-panel painting featuring fragmented and re-constructed images of the iconic figures he has created. This show marked his first solo exhibition in five years and it was a resounding success – the price, purchased by a single collector, was featured in Artweek (review), Juxtapoz (interview), and The Alternative Press.

“What Coop seems to know better than most in this culture of denial, is the potency of seemingly empty and quotidian signs to provoke – how the subliminal lingua of subversion can work simultaneously with the sanctioned language of seduction. He knows how to tap into our psychic primordial pop-ooze of horror, vulgarity, and degeneration, and then how to wrap it all up in the sweetest sugar-coated confections of tasty tease.”
- Carlo McCormick, from his introduction to Devil’s Advocate, the Art of Coop
